My Background

I first became aware of Pilates whilst training to be a dancer at The Laban Centre of Contemporary Dance.

As a child I often had back problems and was constantly seeing a physiotherapist. One of my concerns about going onto a full-time dance course centered around these continual back problems.

Pilates was taught weekly throughout my training at Laban, and after a few months I noticed that I had become a lot stronger in the core area and that my back problems were much more under control. I have not had a serious back problem since.
I decided to research into Pilates and other complementary methods for my final dissertation, and whilst researching this, I became more interested in the Pilates methodology and decided I would like to train to become a practitioner once graduated.

After graduating, I did some research into the different Pilates training establishments and decided that The Pilates Foundation was the right one for me.

Although I had already been attending Pilates matwork classes for three years and had a small range of anatomy knowledge from my dance degree, I was keen to expand my knowledge, and attend courses which offered a more thorough understanding of the technique.

I also began teaching dance and Pilates at Oxford & Cherwell College. I have also part choreographed some Contemporary Dance pieces alongside a fellow Laban graduate.

In 2009, I got married, and my surname changed from Deussen to Dyson.

About 5 years ago our chiropractor advised us to take up Pilates to help reduce our lower back problems and improve our flexibility. The chiropractor showed us a couple of Pilates exercises to do each day namely the "cat" stretch and the "bridge" exercise. We both started a weekly beginners Pilates course with you at around the same time.

At 67 and 72 years respectively we have found the Pilates exercises to be very suitable for the older person with a back problem.

We are now able to do more advanced exercises, and over the period our posture, flexibility and balance are much improved, with the bonus that our lower back problems have been less frequent and less severe.

We greatly appreciate your professionalism, enthusiasm and help throughout the courses.
